McLaren Vale Old Vine Shiraz 2024 rated 97 points by Robert Parker Wine Advocate
E. J. McDougall is proud to announce that the 2024 E. J. McDougall McLaren Vale Old Vine Shiraz has received 97 points from Erin Larkin of Robert Parker Wine Advocate—recognition that reflects both the quality of the wine and the remarkable heritage of the vineyards behind it.
Sourced from two historic McLaren Vale blocks planted on their own roots in 1939 and 1942, this fine Australian Shiraz captures the depth, character and continuity of old-vine viticulture in one of Australia’s most respected wine regions.
A Sophisticated Expression of Old-Vine McLaren Vale Shiraz
Erin Larkin describes the 2024 Old Vine Shiraz as dark-fruited, exotic, delicate and fresh, noting the vibrancy that lifts the wine beyond its natural concentration.
She particularly highlights its balance and sophistication, calling it an “excellent, modern, sophisticated example of Australian Shiraz.”
The winemaking is deliberately restrained. Fermentation takes place in concrete with some whole-bunch inclusion, followed by maturation in foudre and extended bottle ageing before release. The resulting structure is finely woven, with tannins defined more by graphite-like texture and elegance than sheer power.
Old Vines, Place and Longevity
For E. J. McDougall, the philosophy is simple: allow exceptional vineyards to speak clearly.
Edward McDougall, Proprietor and Oenologist, says:
“This is a great honour for us, as it is not only the hard work of our team but also the legacy of the vineyards we are so lucky to work with. Our mission has always been to articulate place in a clear, restrained, and natural way.”
The 97-point rating is a significant recognition of E. J. McDougall’s pursuit of elegance, structure and longevity in Australian Shiraz, while preserving the character of some of McLaren Vale’s oldest surviving vines.
Why This 97-Point Shiraz Matters
For collectors and fine wine enthusiasts, the significance lies beyond the score. The 2024 vintage brings together historic own-rooted vineyards, limited production, careful élevage and a site-driven winemaking philosophy—qualities increasingly valued in fine wine collecting.
Recognition from Robert Parker Wine Advocate further places this McLaren Vale Old Vine Shiraz within the international conversation around world-class Australian wine.
