E. J. McDougall Receives Top Ranking and Glowing Commentary by Huon Hooke, The Real Review

[14 August 2025, Melbourne, Australia] – E. J. McDougall, Fine Wines of Australia, is pleased to announce that all of its distinguished wines have been featured in Huon Hooke ’s recent publication for The Real Review , entitled "New Brand from Eddie McDougall." This esteemed recognition underscores Edward McDougall's dedication to producing exceptional wines that reflect the unique Australian terroir, as Hooke says, “I have tasted this wine ‘open’ twice and ‘blind’ once and found it extraordinarily good.”

The wines Hooke and his colleague reviewed for this prestigious publication represent the pinnacle of Australian winemaking, showcasing the country’s finest regions and oldest vineyards dating back to 1939. E. J. McDougall's wines were praised for their exceptional quality, complexity, and ageing potential, which was summarised by Hooke as a “super-serious trio, up-market wines branded under E. J. McDougall. And they are very smart."

Edward McDougall, Proprietor and Oenologist states, "We are deeply honoured to receive recognition from Huon Hooke and his team at The Real Review, a highly respected authority within the Australian and New Zealand wine industry. This acknowledgement reflects the unwavering commitment of our team, the exceptional growers we collaborate with, and the relationships we have cultivated over the past two decades. Our ambition is to craft wines that are both refined and expressive, and we are delighted to see our endeavours acknowledged in this manner."

The wines featured in the review are as follows:

  • 2024 E. J. McDougall Margaret River Single Vineyard Chardonnay - 95/100, Top Rank Ribbon - Light, bright yellow colour with a very complex bouquet of roasted nuts, singed toast, matchstick, grapefruit and much more, including generous and stylish oak. It's very generous and powerful, and this theme continues in the mouth where it is full bodied and generous—a riper style of powerful and very regional chardonnay with a gentle kick of alcohol warmth and a long, long carry. Classic gingin clone grapefruit. This youngster is already showing strongly.
  • 2023 E. J. McDougall McLaren Vale Old Vine Shiraz - 93/100 Top Rank Ribbon - Deep ruby and purple colours in the glass. Blood plum, nori and crushed violets on the nose. Deep and powerful dark fruits fill the palate; there’s lashings of savoury complexity to balance that fruit weight, mocha and ferrous minerality stand at the fore. Great length, built with powerful but velvet-textured tannins that carry it the full length.
  • 2023 E. J. McDougall McLaren Vale Old Vine Grenache - 93/100 - Medium ruby-red colour. Raspberry purée and red roses on the nose. Full and dense red and blue fruits but with a lift of acidity, keeping freshness to it. Good length, still primary from entry to finish but a little lingering mountain herb note adds character and will no doubt build over time.

E. J. McDougall extends an invitation to wine connoisseurs and professionals worldwide to experience the excellence of its award-winning wines. With a commitment to working with old vineyards and meticulous winemaking practices, the winemaker consistently produces wines of both elegance and distinction.
