E.J. McDougall Featured in Decanter: A Milestone for the "Négociant-éleveur"
It is a privilege to share that Eddie McDougall, proprietor and oenologist of E.J. McDougall, has been featured in the March 2026 issue of Decanter.
Being one of the world’s most respected wine magazines, Decanter has been capturing information on the individuals who influenced the modern world of viticulture. The fact that it recognises the journey of Eddie is significant to the E.J. McDougall story, as it is more than two decades of experience in international winemaking across various continents and cultures of wine.
The feature follows the evolution of Eddie the revolutionary Flying Winemaker to the globally recognised negociant-eleveur, wine producer whose products were marked by uniformity, precision and character.
A Global Winemaker with a Distinct Signature
From early vintages spent working throughout Asia and Europe to establishing focused production in Australia and New Zealand, Eddie’s career has been shaped by a simple idea: great wine reflects both place and the discipline of the person guiding it.
As Decanter notes:
“You can taste the world with one winemaker’s hand or expression — you can see a signature style that comes through across different regions.”
Across vineyards and hemispheres, that signature style remains clear:
perfumed aromatics, vibrant fruit expression, and structural balance.
Rather than imposing a formula, Eddie’s philosophy is to reveal the identity of each vineyard while maintaining a recognisable thread of craftsmanship across every wine produced under the E.J. McDougall label.
The Reality of Nomadic Winemaking
The idea of the travelling winemaker is often romanticised. In practice, it requires an exceptional level of discipline, coordination and trust.
Maintaining quality across multiple regions means long harvest seasons, constant travel and close collaboration with growers.
As Eddie explains in the Decanter feature:
“Maintaining quality control across all of those locations does come with a personal cost… It’s a lot of travelling across time zones, being on planes, and a huge amount of driving.”
Yet the reward is consistency.
“The benefit for the consumer with nomadic wines is that they’re reliable.”
For collectors, sommeliers and wine enthusiasts, reliability is essential. Each bottle represents not only a vineyard site, but the experience and judgement developed through decades of global harvests.

Spotlight Wine: 2023 Old Vine Shiraz, Blewitt Springs
The Decanter feature also highlights one of the standout wines in the E.J. McDougall portfolio: the 2023 Old Vine Shiraz from Blewitt Springs, located within the renowned McLaren Vale region.
The fruit is sourced from vines planted in the late 1930s, rooted in sandy gravel soils over red clay — conditions known for producing Shiraz with aromatic lift and finesse.
Winemaking details include:
Open-top concrete fermentation
Gentle extraction to preserve aromatics
Maturation in seasoned French foudres for ten months
The resulting wine shows:
Rich dark plum and blackcurrant
Cracked peppercorn and subtle smoky herbs
Firm yet refined tannin structure
Savoury, earthy complexity balanced with freshness
Recommended drinking window: 2026–2040.

Expanding the Tradition of Global Winemaking
Being recognised by Decanter is both an honour and a milestone for the E.J. McDougall brand.
More importantly, it reflects a broader shift within the wine world — one where expertise, collaboration and global perspective are reshaping how great wines are produced.
At E.J. McDougall, our focus remains unchanged: crafting wines of authenticity, precision and longevity. Wines that express the character of their vineyards while reflecting the steady hand behind them.
We extend our sincere thanks to Decanter for recognising the journey and for its continued support of the global wine community.
